Hockey Performance Group in Burlington

Introduction

Cogent Rehab’s Hockey Performance Group is a physiotherapist-led summer program for young hockey players who want to build better off-season movement foundations. This group focuses on balance, hip mobility, lower-body strength, power, trunk control, and movement patterns that support skating and athletic durability.

Rather than trying to mimic full on-ice training, this group focuses on key physical qualities that help hockey players move more efficiently, tolerate training better, and prepare more confidently for the next stage of the season.

Who This Group Is For

This program may be a good fit for:

  • hockey players in the off-season

  • athletes who need stronger lower-body and hip foundations

  • players who want better balance and skating support

  • youth who need more control in single-leg positions

  • athletes who want better movement quality and athletic confidence

It may also be helpful for players who have had previous lower-body injuries or who feel they lack strength, stability, or movement efficiency.

What We Focus On

Hip Mobility

Hockey demands strong lower-body positions and repeated movement through the hips. We work on mobility and control that support skating posture and efficient mechanics.

Lower-Body Strength

The program builds foundational strength through the hips, thighs, calves, and trunk to support force production and durability.

Single-Leg Balance and Stability

Much of hockey depends on control from one leg to the other. We use balance and support drills to improve stability, posture, and control.

Trunk Control

Athletes need to manage rotation, posture, and force transfer well. Trunk stability and control are key parts of the program.

Power and Quick Recovery

We progressively build lower-body power and quickness through jumping, bounding, and more dynamic athletic tasks.

Typical Session Structure

Each session follows a structured 60-minute format:

  • 5 minutes: arrival, check-in, and briefing

  • 8 minutes: group warm-up

  • 40 minutes: 5-station circuit completed in pairs

  • 5 minutes: short whole-group finisher

  • 2 minutes: wrap-up and home focus

This structure keeps the group organized, progressive, and easy for athletes to follow week to week.

Why This Group Matters

Some youth hockey athletes are strong on skill but weak in movement foundations. Others are active but lack balance, control, or lower-body support. This program gives them a better base for future training and sport participation.

Based on the fact that this is physiotherapist-led, the program also offers a more thoughtful environment for athletes with previous concerns around:

  • groin pain

  • hip tightness

  • knee pain

  • ankle instability

  • lower-body asymmetry

  • return-to-sport confidence

Who May Benefit from an Add-on Assessment

Some hockey athletes may benefit from a 30-minute movement screen or 60-minute physiotherapy assessment before starting, especially if they have:

  • repeated ankle sprains

  • knee pain

  • groin pain

  • previous muscle strains

  • reduced confidence with cutting or landing

  • current or recurring discomfort during hockey
