Overhead Sports Performance Group in Burlington

Introduction

Cogent Rehab’s Overhead Sports Performance Group is designed for young athletes involved in sports with repeated overhead demands, including tennis, baseball, softball, volleyball, basketball, swimming, and other overhead or racquet-based sports.

This physiotherapist-led group focuses on the physical foundations that support overhead performance, including shoulder control, trunk rotation, force transfer, arm care, lower-half stability, and movement quality.

Who This Group Is For

This program may be a good fit for:

  • tennis players

  • baseball and softball athletes

  • volleyball players

  • basketball athletes

  • swimmers

  • quarterbacks and other overhead athletes

  • youth who want stronger overhead movement foundations and better upper-quarter control

This group is appropriate for athletes who are generally participating in sport and can tolerate supervised group activity. Some athletes with current pain, a recent injury, or more complex issues may be better suited for an individual assessment first.

What We Focus On

Shoulder and Scapular Control

We work on the shoulder blade and upper-quarter control patterns that help athletes organize overhead movement more effectively.

Trunk Rotation and Force Transfer
Overhead movement depends on more than just the arm. The trunk and lower body are major contributors to force production and movement control.

Lower-Half Support

Strong overhead mechanics often depend on good split-stance control, balance, and lower-body organization.

Arm Care and Mobility

The group includes arm-care concepts and drills to support upper-quarter control and tolerance.

Movement Quality and Confidence

We emphasize more organized, efficient, and confident movement rather than simply high-volume overhead repetitions.

Typical Session Structure

Each session follows a structured 60-minute format:

  • 5 minutes: arrival, check-in, and briefing

  • 8 minutes: group warm-up

  • 40 minutes: 5-station circuit completed in pairs

  • 5 minutes: short whole-group finisher

  • 2 minutes: wrap-up and home focus

This structure keeps the group organized, progressive, and easy for athletes to follow week to week.

What Makes This Group Unique

Overhead athletes often need more than general strength. They benefit from a program that respects how the shoulder, trunk, and lower body work together. This group helps build those foundations in a structured, age-appropriate way.

It can also be a good fit for athletes with previous issues such as:

  • shoulder irritation

  • elbow discomfort

  • arm fatigue

  • reduced trunk control

  • concerns about return to sport after prior overload or injury

Who May Benefit from an Add-on Assessment

Some overhead athletes may benefit from a 30-minute movement screen or 60-minute physiotherapy assessment before starting, especially if they have:

  • recurrent dislocations/subluxations

  • shoulder pain

  • neck pain

  • previous muscle strains

  • reduced confidence with throwing, catching or hitting

  • current or recurring discomfort during overhead sports
