Youth Athletic Development Group in Burlington
Introduction
Cogent Rehab’s Youth Athletic Development Group is designed for active kids and teens who want to build stronger athletic foundations through better coordination, balance, strength, speed, landing control, and movement confidence.
This physiotherapist-led group is especially useful for:
-
multi-sport youth athletes
-
younger athletes building general foundations
-
active kids who want better overall movement confidence
-
overflow placement from sport-specific groups when a more general base is the better fit
Who This Group Is For
This program may be a good fit for:
-
multi-sport athletes
-
younger athletes not yet ready for a narrower sport-specific focus
-
active youth who want better coordination, strength, and confidence
-
families looking for a broad movement-development option
-
athletes who are better suited to a foundational program before entering a more specific stream
This group is appropriate for athletes who are generally participating in sport and can tolerate supervised group activity. Some athletes with current pain, a recent injury, or more complex issues may be better suited for an individual assessment first.
What We Focus On
Movement Skill Basics
We teach and reinforce key movement patterns such as squatting, hinging, lunging, landing, and crawling.
Coordination and Agility
The program includes footwork, direction change, reaction tasks, and general athletic organization.
Strength Fundamentals
Athletes work on simple, age-appropriate strength foundations using bodyweight and basic resistance patterns.
Balance and Landing Control
We build steadier posture, better single-leg control, and safer jump-and-landing mechanics.
Movement Confidence
Many young athletes simply need more positive repetition, better movement organization, and confidence in their bodies.
Typical Session Structure
Each session follows a structured 60-minute format:
-
5 minutes: arrival, check-in, and briefing
-
8 minutes: group warm-up
-
40 minutes: 5-station circuit completed in pairs
-
5 minutes: short whole-group finisher
-
2 minutes: wrap-up and home focus
This structure keeps the group organized, progressive, and easy for athletes to follow week to week.

What Makes This Group Unique
This group supports young movers who may be flexible but need better control, or athletes who are expressive and active but need stronger support strength, landing organization, or movement confidence.
Because it is physiotherapist-led, it can also be a useful option for athletes with previous concerns such as:
-
ankle instability
-
knee discomfort
-
overuse complaints
-
low back pain
-
balance difficulty
-
return-to-sport concerns after previous injury
Who May Benefit from an Add-on Assessment
Some overhead athletes may benefit from a 30-minute movement screen or 60-minute physiotherapy assessment before starting, especially if they have:
-
recurrent dislocations/subluxations
-
shoulder pain
-
neck pain
-
previous muscle strains
-
reduced confidence with throwing, catching or hitting
-
current or recurring discomfort during overhead sports
